Pharrell's Something in the Water Festival brought A-list musicians and artists to Virginia Beach for a 3 day festival. The event featured KAWS, the artist, who installed his HOLIDAY sculpture on the sand for the third and final day of the music festival. The Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York, has outlined in detail its ongoing expansion plan that will feature a towering mirror-mosaic canopy designed by Olafur Eliasson. The mirrored entrance will greet patrons and welcome them to the planned $160 million expansion of the museum. The permanent installation is called Common Sky and will cover the "Indoor Town Square." “Common sky is an expansive sculpture through which visitors experience the constant motion of the surrounding natural environment," acclaimed Icelandic-Danish artist Olafur Eliasson said about the artwork. Artist Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian passed away this week at age 97. Farmanfarmaian, a leader in the contemporary art movement in Iran mixed geometric abstraction with Persian and Iranian art and craft. Farmanfarmaians work of dazzling mirrored compositions were inspired by Iranian mosques. Farmanfarmaian studied at the Faculty of Fine Art in Tehran before moving to the US in 1945, where she studied art at Cornell University in Ithaca and then fashion illustration at Parsons School of Design in New York from 1946-49. She became a mainstay of the evolving art scene in New York in the 1950s and 1960s, and counted Willem de Kooning, Joan Mitchell and Andy Warhol among her friends.
