The Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York, has outlined in detail its ongoing expansion plan that will feature a towering mirror-mosaic canopy designed by Olafur Eliasson. The mirrored entrance will greet patrons and welcome them to the planned $160 million expansion of the museum.
The permanent installation is called Common Sky and will cover the "Indoor Town Square."
“Common sky is an expansive sculpture through which visitors experience the constant motion of the surrounding natural environment," acclaimed Icelandic-Danish artist Olafur Eliasson said about the artwork. "The changing light conditions, the passing clouds, the progression of the sun over the course of the day, the flow of the seasons all resonate within this warm, welcoming space."
With construction expected to begin at the end of this year, the gallery has announced that operations at its main campus will be shut down as 2020 approaches. At the beginning of next year, a 15,000-square-foot Albright-Knox Northland campus will open and display special exhibitions and installations that don’t require museum-quality conditions.
